Microscope micrometers are commonly used for measuring or counting specimens. Eyepiece micrometers (also referred to as “reticles”) are small glass discs with markings on them. The micrometer is mounted in one of the two eyepieces and superimposes an image of the markings over the image of the specimen. Stage micrometers are slides with markings of a known dimension that, when viewed under the microscope, can be used to calibrate eyepiece micrometers.

Reticles / Eyepiece Micrometers

What size of reticle do I need? How do I install an eyepice micrometer?

1. Remove the eyepiece from the microscope viewing head:

2. Flip over the eyepiece, remove the reticle holder from the eyepiece base by unscrewing the ring:

3. Measure the internal diameter of the reticle holder (where the reticle sits on). You will see a small step or ridge inside the ring (red arrow points to that).

4. Now you can install a new reticle, while you carefully place the reticle on the ridge.

Calibration

Since the size of the eyepiece micrometer image (e.g. a linear scale) appears the same even though the specimen can be magnified to a greater or lesser degree, the markings on the micrometer do not by themselves indicate any particular measurement. When a stage micrometer with known dimensions is viewed through an eyepiece micrometer, however, the measurement indicated by the eyepiece micrometer at that magnification can be noted and later used to make accurate measurements.microscope micrometer

2. BI151/35/50:   Meiji Techno 0.5x C-Mount Adapter with 19 mm reticle mount, for use with 1/2″ or 1/1.8″ chip CCD cameras, $399.00

4. Filar Eyepice Reticles

The Filar eyepiece micrometer is a combination of a focusing eyepiece and reticle, but features a moveable line rule. The Filar micrometer avoids the necessity to estimate fractions of a division on a stage micrometer which may render inaccurate readings.""The mobile line inside the micrometer is designed to cross the field of view, traversing a fixed scale, by means of a precision screw mechanism that is operated by rotating the external knob. In general measuring applications, a single line is aligned with one end of the specimen feature to be measured and a reading of the calibrated knob is noted.

Since installing the filar eyepiece on one side of a binocular head does not work well in practice, our MA414 includes a monocular head so that one can just quickly swap heads when measurement tasks are required.

""
MA414 Filar Eyepiece with Monocular HeadFor the MA414, the reticle scale has a travel distance of 8 millimeters. The knob of the micrometer screw is also divided into 100 intervals, so that one interval of the knob division corresponds to 0.1 interval of the eyepiece scale. One full rotation of the knob translates the measuring line across one interval of the eyepiece scale.
