From photography we know that if we like to capture 1 fps, we need to open the shutter for 1 sec. If we like to make a video at 10fps, theoretically we need 1/10 of a second or 0.1sec = 100ms to keep the shutter open and then close it for the rest of second (900ms). For a 25 fps, we need a shutter speed at 1/25 sec = 0.04sec or 40ms. This picture illustrates the job:

Thus, in a regular camera we need to set the exposure time at  maximum 40ms, assuming we we are able to get a nice bright image, then we can make a video at 25fps.

High Sensitivity

To achieve high sensitivity, which is one of the most important characteristics for security cameras, this time Sony developed back-illuminated structure 2.4 µm unit pixel and accomplished the equivalent sensitivity as the existing back-illuminated structure 2.8 µm unit pixel, “IMX136LQJ”*2. Also near infrared sensitivity was improved from the IMX136LQJ, which is equivalent to the IMX236LQJ*3, and it is suitable for Day/Night cameras and near infrared light LED used as auxiliary light.

High Dynamic Range

Dynamic range is determined by the ratio of saturation signal and dark random noise. The IMX178LQJ featuring 14 bit ADC reduced quantization noise and also suppressed dark random noise. At the result, high dynamic range was achieved, which is equivalent to the existing 3.75 µm unit pixel, the IMX104LQJ*4. It enables clear image quality in light and dark areas even for the objects with high contrast.

Image Format

The format for image size of security camera is typically 4:3, 5:4 for fisheye lens, or 16:9 for full HD. The IMX178LQJ supports all these three formats in 5M pixels high resolution. Also it secures high resolution as well as high sensitivity and high dynamic range at the same time, therefore the specification works best for high performance security cameras with type 1/2 lenses.

Compatibility with Existing Sony Products

Bioimager BioCam Speed3 are the first to feature Bioimager innovative high-speed core technology providing super fast live speed rates of 500 fps with binning and over 120fps in full resolution of 1.5MP. Due to the enhancement of  the live image speed in combination with the high resolution the user is enabled to facilitate precise focusing and easy positioning of specimens without interlace effect in a more efficient way – a clear advantage in the analysis of moving objects and routine work in laboratories.

Exposure times up to 15 s ensure optimum captured images, also under low-light conditions. The maximum possible color depth is 36 bit.

Why High Speed Camera is so important?

The below video shows how a high-speed camera can help scientists to discover important phenomena. In this specific case,Japanese scientists use a high speed camera to find out the transmission mechanisms of the virus, such as novel coronavirus COVID-19, call the smaller size particles  microdroplets. The video was reported by NHK Japanese TV  and English subtitle was added for some parts:
